Timber and Metal Garage Door Painting
Timber Garage Doors
Timber garage doors need the same preparation discipline as any other exterior timber surface. We strip back to sound timber, fill any cracks or grain splits, and apply an oil-based or specialist exterior timber primer before finish coats.
Side-hinged and up-and-over timber doors on Victorian and Edwardian properties in Broadwater and Central Worthing sometimes carry heavy paint build-up from previous work. Painting over that build-up without stripping transfers the same failure points to the new coat within a season.
Two full coats of exterior gloss or satin are standard. With correct preparation a timber garage door finish should hold for five to eight years on a sheltered aspect.
Metal and Steel Doors
Metal garage doors in Worthing face accelerated corrosion from salt air, particularly within a few streets of the seafront. Surface rust that is not treated at the painting stage bleeds through any finish applied over it.
We wire-brush loose scale, apply rust converter to active corrosion, and prime with a rust-inhibiting metal primer before any topcoat. The 1930s metal doors common in Goring-by-Sea and Findon Valley often have rust at the panel edges and bottom rails — the areas that hold moisture longest.
The primer coat is the most important element of a metal door finish. Once it has cured, we apply a durable exterior metal finish in the chosen colour.

GRP, uPVC, and Combining with an Exterior Repaint

GRP and Composite Doors
GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is the material in most modern composite garage doors. It is smooth and non-porous — a standard primer will not bond to it and the finish will peel.
We use specialist adhesion primers formulated for composite substrates, which create the mechanical key the topcoat needs. Any exterior finish colour can be used once the adhesion primer is in place. GRP is one of the more weather-resistant garage door materials in a coastal environment, provided it is painted and maintained correctly.
uPVC Doors
uPVC garage doors can be painted with good durability when a specialist plastic primer is used. Standard primers do not adhere to the smooth uPVC surface and will lift within months.
A correctly primed and painted uPVC door holds its finish for five to eight years before a refresh is needed. Colour updates are popular on Worthing properties — particularly moving from faded white or cream to contemporary grey or black to coordinate with updated front doors or window frames.
Combining with an Exterior Repaint
Garage doors are frequently done as part of a wider exterior repaint. In Worthing, where sea air makes exterior maintenance a regular cycle, combining the garage door with a full exterior repaint in the same visit makes practical sense.
See our exterior painting page for full details on exterior repaints. For other exterior timber work, see our wood painting page.
How We Paint Garage Doors
1. Assessment
We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.
2. Surface Preparation
Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and any rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased. No new product goes on over a compromised surface.
3. Priming
Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.
4. Finish Coats
Two finish coats are standard for garage doors. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.
5. Final Check
We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.

- Metal or steel door with rust treatment needed: £220–350
- GRP or composite door: £200–320
- uPVC door: £180–280
